TORONTO, ON (October 10) – Danzas Sagradas is a new work masterfully conceived by award-winning flamenco dancer and choreographer, Anjelica Scannura. Inspired by Pablo Picasso’s revolutionary painting Guernica, Anjelica examines the monumental impact this work has had on the world stage through dramatic imagery told through dance, music, visual art and film. Danzas Sagradas will take place at Harbourfront Centre, Studio Theatre on November 15 and 16 at 8:00pm.
Recognized in the dance community as Canada’s preeminent flamenco family, the Scannura family has been pursuing the flamenco and art form with authenticity and excellence their Toronto-based company. Ritmo Flamenco Dance and Music Ensemble since 1995. Danzas Sagradas delves deep into the heart of flamenco’s most profound essence, with musical composition by flamenco guitarist and composer, Roger Scannura. Anjelica Scannura dances from the heart and portrays the depth of emotion embraced with technical virtuosity to perform her first full-length solo production. A recent Paula Citron Award winner, Anjelica Scannura has spent years honing her craft in Spain.
“Scannura is developing her own hybrid and she is truly a representative of Canadian dance in that respect. Her dancing and choreography expresses a country of immigrants where many styles collide together to take dance into New World territory” – Paula Citron, The Globe and Mail
Danzas Sagradas will feature evocative lighting design by Sharon DiGenova. A surreal film montage by Bryan Belanger Diaz and Kate Lusk will allow Anjelica to portray visceral impressions of the aftermath of Guernica while making reference to an underlying theme: the effects of war on the innocents of the world. Cellist Laura Jones, violinist Laurence will accompany Roger Scannura’s haunting score musically and dancers Valerie Scannura and Sachi O’Hoski will join Anjelica in several pieces.
